An important quote found in chapter one is "We've all had to rewrite the scripts of our lives the last few weeks. We've learnt a lot and we've had to figure out what's important, what matters- what really matters. It's been quite a time." This quote is important because it tells the audience that the group have been through a lot throughout the book and that they have learnt the value of each other and the world that they used to know. Another significant quote from chapter one is "It’s terribly, terribly important recording what we’ve done, in words, on paper, it’s got to be our way of telling ourselves that we mean something, that we matter. That the things we’ve done have made a difference. I don’t know how big a difference, but a difference." This is because the characters realise that they have changed Australia. This quote shows that even though everyone is so restless and extremely tired, Ellie pushes them all to keep going like a good leader would do. It also shows that everyone had become a little bit lazy and tired. Another quote found in this chapter stated by Ellie as well was, "As we got a better view of the plains we were surprised to see 6 different fires in the distance scattered across the countryside.
