Chapter one - Camille
In chapter one, the characters of Robyn (pg 1), Chris (pg 2), Fi (pg 3), Corrie (pg 3), Kevin (pg 5), Elliot (pg 6 briefly), Meriam (pg 6 briefly), Homer (pg 7), Ellie (pg 8) and Lee (pg 10) are introduced to the reader. The chapter starts off introducing the main character, Ellie, and how she is writing the book. This immediately shows the reader that the rest of the book will be in first person. It also sets the scene in a mountain range clearing in a place called Hell.
Corrie really wants to go on a road trip with her friends (stated above) to either Taylor's Stitch or Hell. The characters try to convince all of their parents to let them go, and all of them, besides Chris, Elliot and Meriam, are successful. They briefly discuss the tale of the hermit that killed his wife and children and hid in Hell, as they were going to be going there. The most explored characters in this chapter are Homer and Kevin, and by the end of the chapter, it is clear to see that Homer and Corrie have strong relationships/friendships with Ellie.

Chapter two - Gabby
The teenagers missed Commemoration Day so that they could go on this trip, to Hell. They climbed up and saw the other side, which was Hell. They all stopped for a while because they got tired and discussed what they packed. Fi said she packed shirts, jumpers, gloves, socks, undies, towel and a dressing gown. At about five o’clock they began moving again at the top, Satan’s step looked as wild and forbidding as they had from distance. They were willing to climb satan's steps even though it was difficult. There was a quite sheer drop either side of the black but there was a log that would help them. So after a few minutes Kevin was the last one who climbed on the log. He slid down the tree because he was scared of insects. Ellie said she found a running water to get some drink. It was getting late so they set up the camp site. Then finally Robyn said she found a bridge.
Chapter three - Daniel
At the start of chapter three all the people are going to a place called Hell. They walk past a bridge that was over a creek. They wanted to camp there but they didn’t. As they were driving through the track they found a field, so they decided to stay there instead. They found a creek that was freezing cold. They made a fire to cook from and eat their dinner- 2 minute noodles. At night they stayed up late and talked because they were excited to be there.

chapter five- camille
In this chapter, Ellie and the rest of the group are quite restless and lazy. Although Corrie and Ellie go for short hikes, there isn't much action between all of the characters. The group realise how special the campsite is and they decide that they should come back and visit it more often, and to keep it a secret from everybody else. Finally, the group know that they need to start heading home, so the begin their trip up Satan's Steps, where it is hot and humid and uncomfortable for everyone. While Ellie and Corrie bond with their shared love of traveling, everyone else, including the two, start becoming restless and sensitive as time goes on. There are considerably more fights and arguments forming and taking place. There isn't lots of development seen from the characters, besides from them realising that they are going to miss spending time together, particularly in Hell. One of the most important details about this chapter include that the group discover six random fires ahead of them, which is unusual for their town. This leads to suspicions, mostly from Lee, about the cause of the fires.
chapter six- gabby
chapter seven- daniel
chapter eight- monique
chapter nine- camille
In chapter nine, Ellie, Homer, and the rest of the group are settled into Corrie's house. When everything seems alright, the group realise a helicopter hovering over and around the house. They hide behind the curtains, unsure if they have been spotted or not. They all suspect that the movement of Kevin's dog might have caused the invaders to notice them. After a little while, the helicopter left the house. In this chapter, Homer truly starts to act like a leader. He keeps everyone calm and together in the horrible situation. But, Homer and Ellie still don't feeling safe, so they suggest to the group to sleep in the shearer's shed just for the night. The group all agree, packing important things that they would definitely need, and then they head for the shearer's shed. After a while, the group notice that once again the helicopter is back, but this time with missiles. Two are fired, but only one hits the house, and one is more than enough. The whole house is soon destroyed by the missile, leaving Corrie shocked and traumatized.
chapter ten- gabby
chapter eleven- daniel
chapter twelve- monique
chapter thirteen- camille
In chapter thirteen, Corrie continues to to fiddle with her father's radio, not letting anyone else handle it, but with no luck. Finally, she realises that it's running low on batteries and hands it over to Ellie, who finds out that the radio can access worldwide stations. Corrie admits to only checking local stations. The group discover a station that is reporting on the invasion happening in Australia, and how America was warned that if they were to intervene, they would end up in a long, bloody war. After a short while, the radio dies. Before they have all completely forgotten what they have heard, Homer suggests writing down what they remember, and after they do, they select the main, important points. The group relocate themselves to Hell. Homer also suggests that the group take some cattle with them as a source of food. Their next plan is to send six people into the main area in Wirrawee to observe how the soldiers think and act. They travel into the town in pairs: Kevin and Corrie, Fiona and Homer, Chris and Robyn. They would note down what they saw, and then return to Hell in 48 hours. Homer develops the most in this chapter, taking the shape of a leader that would help the group not only short term, but long term too. Ellie develops strange feelings towards both Homer and Lee, and doesn't know who she likes more.
